Snap! Raise vs. Vertical Raise: the rep-led rivals

Neither is our platform and neither pays us anything — our site is operated by booster, a competitor to both, so weigh that as you read. If you've decided you want a rep-led campaign, here's how the two shops actually differ.

Same playbook, different weight class

Both run the identical mechanic: a rep meets your team, athletes submit family and friend contacts, a ~two-week digital campaign pushes those contacts for donations. The differences are scale, channel, and paper trail. Snap! Raise is the incumbent — $950M+ raised, 150,000+ groups, and since January 2025 the exclusive fundraising partner of Varsity Brands/BSN Sports, which means your AD probably already gets called on by their channel. Vertical Raise is the smaller Idaho challenger running the same play — close enough that the two have litigated against each other all the way to the Idaho Supreme Court.

The fine print, side by side

  • Snap! Raise: 20% if your participation goal is met; an unpublished higher rate if missed; donors cover ~4% processing. All-in estimates from third parties: 20–30%.
  • Vertical Raise: reported 17–24% plus 3–4% processing — with BBB complaints and fee litigation (including a confidential 2021 settlement) alleging deducted fees differed from what groups expected.

Translation: with either shop, the rate card you negotiate in writing is the product. Neither publishes a complete public price list; both models depend on students supplying contact lists; neither carries your donor data into next season.

How to choose between them

  • Snap! Raise if you want the bigger machine, your school already buys from BSN/Varsity, and you get the below-goal rate in writing.
  • Vertical Raise if you have a local rep you genuinely trust and negotiate a better written rate than Snap! offers — the smaller shop can be more flexible.
  • Neither if the contact-list mechanic or the annual reset is the actual problem — in which case the comparison you want is recurring vs. campaign fundraising, or the free-tool lane in our 99Pledges report.
